SAMPSA SARPARANTA
Sarparanta is known for his social realism. He typically works from photographs. In his work, Sarparanta combines photography’s ability to capture a moment instantly with the slowness of oil painting and the dignity created by the “weight” inherited from its golden age.
Sarparanta often uses this as a way to elevate everyday moments to something greater than life itself. Or to force the viewer to pause and reflect on the things we recognize from the constant stream of news images. In Sarparanta’s work, fleeting glimpses of everyday life collide with social injustices and the melancholy of urban life. However, the work always strives to seek out what is most important: meaning.
Sampsa Sarparanta (b. 1973) has held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Finland and abroad during his artistic career, which spans more than 25 years. His works are included in the collections of Kiasma, the City of Turku, and the Salo Art Museum, among others.
Sarparanta is also known for his 20-year career as the frontman of the punk band No Shame, as well as a singer-songwriter and solo artist in his current band, Sarparanta.
Sarparanta studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. She lives and works in Perniö.
