The Rajaportti Sauna is located in Ylä-Pispala, Tampere, at Pispalan valtatie 9. It opened in 1906 and is considered Finland’s oldest public sauna still in operation. The sauna’s history is linked to the growth of Pispala: in the late 19th century, Pispalanharju began to develop into a working-class neighborhood near what was then the outskirts of Tampere.

Hermanni and Maria Lahtinen were the driving force behind the sauna. They first opened a store in Rajaportti in 1900, and Maria Lahtinen later began heating the sauna on the property, initially for her own use and that of her neighbors, and gradually for a wider public. Public saunas were of great importance at a time when homes did not yet have their own bathing facilities. At Rajaportti, people lined up for the sauna, especially during the busiest decades for public saunas.

As a building, the Rajaportti sauna is part of a complex consisting of four buildings. The complex includes the sauna building, a café building, a seamstress’s house, and a courtyard building. The interior of the sauna, its fixed furnishings, the exterior appearance of the buildings, and the courtyard complex are protected due to their national cultural and historical significance. The protection emphasizes that Rajaportti has preserved the original layout, furnishings, and architectural style typical of Pispala.

Today, the Rajaportti sauna is owned by the City of Tampere, and the Pispala Sauna Association is responsible for its operations. The sauna remains open year-round. Its well-known feature is a single-heating stone-built stove, whose large sauna stones are heated with firewood at the start of each sauna day. For visitors, Rajaportti is both a historic building and a functioning public sauna.
