The circus is coming! And it’s going to get all of Finland spinning along with it
Imagine a place where everyone can be themselves—regardless of appearance, background, or gender. A place so international and communal that language isn’t even necessary. A place where people dare to live boldly and without prejudice, take risks, let loose, play, cry, and laugh.
Yes. That’s exactly what we need more of these days: THE CIRCUS.
Contemporary circus is an art form that combines traditional circus skills with popular culture, dance, film, poetry, and the visual arts. Finnish contemporary circus is of a high standard and fills large theaters across Europe—but not yet in its home country. In 2024, Finnish circus was seen in as many as 26 countries—including, in addition to Europe, New Zealand and South Korea.
"The Circus is Coming!" is a campaign organized by Circus & Dance Finland from April to September 2026 to raise the profile of the arts in Finland. We’re bringing together circus events and artists from all over Finland to make circus a phenomenon. Our goal is for contemporary circus to captivate Finnish audiences and reach new audiences.
You can join the “The Circus Is Coming! ” campaign by checking out the circus’s event calendar, attending circus festivals and performances, and taking part in the #somersaultchallenge.
As part of the “The Circus is Coming!” campaign, we are organizing a professional event showcasing circus performances for municipal cultural organizations and theaters—in collaboration with the Kerava Circus Market on September 4.
The campaign will culminate on September 9 in downtown Helsinki with a breathtaking outdoor event that will briefly and unexpectedly take over the urban space.
