Amazing! The Magic and Stories of the Circus

The Theater Museum’s “Huimaa! The Magic and Stories of the Circus” exhibition explores the world of Finnish circus in all its forms. The exhibition takes viewers on a journey through clowns, acrobatics, magic, juggling, traveling circuses, and contemporary circus, but also looks at the circus from a deeper perspective: as training, physical skill, community, and art, where the impossible can seem possible for a moment.

The history of the Finnish circus dates back to the 19th century, when international troupes visited Finland and laid the foundation for the country’s own circus tradition. Gradually, the country developed its own traveling circuses, where skills, stories, and a way of life were passed down from one generation to the next. In the exhibition, this tradition runs parallel to more modern circus art.

Starting in the 1990s, Finnish circus began to evolve toward contemporary circus, drawing inspiration from contemporary dance, music, visual arts, and popular culture, among other sources. In the 2000s, Finnish contemporary circus groups and artists have made a strong impact on international stages.

"Dizzying!" highlights not only the magic of the circus, but also the hard work, courage, and imagination on which the performances are built. The exhibition reminds us that the circus is not just entertainment, but a multifaceted art form where movement, rhythm, humor, danger, and storytelling come together.
