The History of Matopeli
Nokia's Snake game rose to global popularity in the late 1990s and became one of the early phenomena of mobile gaming. The basic concept of Snake originated in games from the early 1970s, but its breakthrough came when Nokia included the game in its phones. The first known version was released in 1997 on the Nokia 6110, and it was developed by Finnish designer Taneli Armanto. The game was designed to be technically simple so that it would work on devices with small screens and limited processing power, but it was precisely this simplicity that made it accessible and addictive.
Snake quickly became a common pastime for people of all ages and was played widely both in Finland and internationally. Its popularity was evident, for example, in competitions that tested players’ skills. Later phone models, such as the Nokia 3310, cemented the game’s status as a classic and introduced new versions, such as Snake II. Nokia’s Snake was significant because it made gaming a part of everyday mobile device use in the era before smartphones. It demonstrated that simple game mechanics could achieve massive popularity and laid the foundation for the later mobile gaming industry.
